Carl Moons | Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, UMC Utrecht

Carl Moons is professor of Clinical Epidemiology and former director of research at the Julius Center at the UMC Utrecht (www.juliuscenter.nl). He is the UMC Utrecht figure head on Artificial Intelligence. He is also affiliated at VanderBilt University (US) and is convenor of the Cochrane Prognosis Methods Group. He is chair of the Dutch ‘Reporting and Expert center for side-effects of Implants’ (Meldpunt en Expertisecentrum Bijwerkingen Implantaten: MEBI). He is also co-initiator and co-director of the new nationwide and unique medtech infrastructure  Health Innovation Netherlands (HI-NL; www.healthinnovation.nl). HI-NL brings all stakeholders in the healthcare sector together at the early stage, to bring medical devices, ranging from robotics, medical diagnostic and screening tests, biomarkers, decisions aids, AI algorithms and eHealth applications, in a responsible and profitable way to the health(care) system. He chaired the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) committee ‘Evaluation of new technology in healthcare’. He is senior author of the guideline for the development and introduction of safe, effective and transparent AI based algorithms in healthcare. He chaired during the covid-19 pandemic the national advisory committee on ‘Digital Solutions to Control Covid-19’. His scientific career (>600 peer reviewed publications books and book chapters) focuses on research on the real impact of medical innovations, ranging from drugs, robotics, medical tests, eHealth and AI-algorithms, for patients, citizens and healthcare. In this respect, he is principal investigator in numerous international clinical studies and networks on medical research and innovation, funded by various international organizations (EU, NHS, NIH).
