Berend Stoel | Associate Professor, LUMC

Berend Stoel is associate professor at the division of image processing, department ofRadiology at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Leiden, the Netherlands. Inthis research group, image processing techniques are developed, implemented andvalidated, in order to produce objective and reproducible assessments of (bio‐) medicalimages.Dr. Stoel is heading the section of ‘Pulmonary and musculoskeletal imaging’, aiming atapplications in these fields. He graduated in medical informatics from the LeidenUniversity, and received his PhD on objective assessment of X‐ray image quality. From1996, he started developing image processing techniques for CT lung densitometry toquantify emphysema, which have been used since in several drug evaluation trials.Currently, his research is mainly focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI)methods for detecting, quantifying and predicting rheumatoid arthritis in a very earlystage from extremity MRI, and quantifying and localizing treatment effects over time.
