About Agnieszka Wegrzyn
Agnieszka Wegrzyn (1988) is one of the founders and Chief Science and Technology Officer of EV Biotech, where she is responsible for developing short and long-term strategies for scientific and technological developments. Together with the team, Agnieszka has created a unique computational pipeline that merges biology with computational modelling and artificial intelligence (AI) to create one-of-a-kind microbial production strains, with the overall mission to shift the petrochemical industry to a greener and more sustainable alternative based on fermentation. She combines her role as CSTO at EV with an appointment as a senior postdoctoral scientist at Leiden University, where she leads interdisciplinary projects focusing on understanding the mechanisms of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in the context of Parkinson's Disease. In her roles, Agnieszka leads her employees and students with passion and compassion, supporting people's growth and ambitions and helping them flourish regardless of their career choices.
Current function
Agnieszka is co-founder and a chief science and technology officer (CSTO) of a startup company EV Biotech. In this role, she is responsible for developing short and long-term strategies for scientific and technological developments of EV Biotech. Furthermore, she works part-time as a senior postdoc at Metabolomics and Analytics Center at Leiden University, where she supervises bachelor's, master and PhD students, as well as apply computational biology methods to study potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for Parkinson's Disease.
Biography
Agnieszka obtained her Bachelor and Masters degrees in Biotechnology at the Jagiellonian University in Poland. Afterwards, she decided to persue a PhD degree and moved to Groningen, where she studied inborn errors of metabolism in the context of computational biology and data integration. At the end of her PhD studies, she decided to co-found a company, EV Biotech, with two fellow PhD students that would see the merge of experimental and computational biology applied to engineer industrially relevant microbes. Since 2019, the company has seen an exponential growth with almost 30 employees and serving multiple industrial clients. In parallel, she has continued her academic career as a postdoc at Metabolomics and Analytics Center at Leiden University.
About our finalist
Agnieszka Wegrzyn is one of the founders of EV Biotech, an R&D company and CRO for the development of sustainable microbial production methods for fine chemicals. Together with the other founders, Linda Dijkshoorn and Sergey Lunev, plus team EV, Agnieszka has created the first computational pipeline that merges biology with computational modelling and artificial intelligence (AI) to create one-of-a-kind microbial production strains, with the overall mission to shift the petrochemical industry to greener and more sustainable alternatives based on fermentation. With her background in systems biology, Agnieszka is the computational master mind of the company. She combines her role as CSTO at EV with an appointment as senior scientist at Leiden University. By having one foot between the door of academia, Agnieszka realises academic collaborations for validation of the methods we develop at EV and ensures that the work we do is scientifically sound. To a large extent thanks to Agnieszka's holistic view and vision, as well as her clear and grasping way to convey these to others, EV Biotech has already realised sales of six client projects and will soon close a series A investment round in just over three years of operation. Agnieszka is an example to all of us at EV, to her students and to those who follow us on our journey to creating a more sustainable society for all.
