Meet your Match: Entrepreneurship

Elena Naumovska | Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer, StemX Bio

Elena Naumovska completed her PhD and post-doctoral research in 3D tissue engineering and iPSC differentiation, where she invented the microtissue technology behind StemX Bio. She co-founded the company to turn this science into a product and now serves as Chief Scientific Officer. From the lab in Leiden, she leads research and development of human pancreatic microtissues, New Approach Methodologies which let drug developers test compounds on human tissue rather than animal models. Her work centers on one goal, micro tissues for macro impact, human-relevant data from the plate to the clinic.

StemX Bio

StemX Bio develops New Approach Methodologies for drug testing. The company differentiates human induced pluripotent stem cells into 3D pancreatic microtissues which contain all key endocrine cell types. These tissues respond to glucose, secrete insulin, and behave like human pancreatic islets. Drug developers use them to test compounds and therapies on human tissue, not animal models, and get data which translates to human outcomes. Based in Leiden, The Netherlands, StemX Bio runs 11 active collaborations and works to develop additional tissue types, including thymus, thyroid, and lung.
