Sarah Blackford is a qualified University careers adviser specialising in providing career development education to students and early career researchers across Europe. At the start of her career, Sarah worked in research at the University of York and then moved into scientific publishing. Her career in careers advisory work began when she moved to Lancaster University, after which she spent 20 years as the head of education at the Society for Experimental Biology. During this time she developed her specialism to support the careers of bioscience students and researchers. In 2017 she set up her own career consultancy business.
PhD Career Consultancy was established by Sarah Blackford in 2017, providing professional career support and advice primarily to science students and researchers. Training is delivered through career education workshops and one-to-one career coaching in research institutions and universities across Europe, as well as more recently delivering them as interactive webinars. The career workshops are broadly based on Sarah’s book, ‘Career planning for research bioscientists’, and include training in aspects of career such as self-awareness, employability and job-seeking strategies, writing a CV and covering letter, interview technique, self-presentation and self-leadership. Further advice and resources are available on the website: www.biosciencecareers.org.
