Carlo Alberto Paggi

Biomedical engineer, Scientist, & Co-founder, chiron

Carlo Alberto Paggi, PhD, MBA, is a biomedical engineer, scientist, and co-founder of chiron, a biotechnology company developing organ-on-chip models for research and drug development. His work brings together microfluidics, tissue engineering, and human cell models to study disease and help reduce reliance on animal testing.

Carlo Alberto earned his PhD at the University of Twente, where he developed joint-on-chip platforms that reproduce aspects of the mechanical and biological environment of human cartilage and synovial tissue. His research has appeared in Nature Reviews Rheumatology, Lab on a Chip, and Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Open. Before co-founding chiron, he conducted orthopedic research at Mayo Clinic and worked on cell and gene therapy development at Lonza.

He holds an MBA from Maastricht University and serves as a convenor in ISO standardization for organ-on-chip devices. Across research, entrepreneurship, and standardization, his focus is on making human-relevant technologies more reliable and useful in the development of new therapies.
