Cedric Lau graduated from Utrecht University with a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2013) and subsequently completed the Master's programme in Pharmacy (2016). After graduation, he worked as a pharmacist at the Pharmacy Department of Leiden University Medical Center before beginning his hospital pharmacy residency at Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht later that year. In October 2020, Cedric started his PhD research under the supervision of Prof Dr Alwin D.R. Huitema, Prof Dr Catherijne A.J. Knibbe, Dr C. van Kesteren, and Dr Robert M. Smeenk. Alongside his work as a hospital pharmacist with focus on Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM), toxicology, and infectious diseases, his research focused on time-dependent pharmacokinetic changes following metabolic and bariatric surgery.
Since late 2024, Cedric has been working for Scheldezoom Farmacie at Admiraal de Ruyter Hospital in Goes. His current areas of practice include clinical trials, oncology/haematology and TDM/toxicology. Since 2018, he has been a member of a Dutch multidisciplinary Expert Working Group that develops national consensus-based recommendations for patients with obesity and/or following metabolic and bariatric surgery.
Presentation: Pharmacotherapy following metabolic and bariatric surgery
Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is increasingly performed worldwide. It is the most effective intervention for achieving sustained weight loss in patients with severe obesity. However, MBS induces anatomical and physiological changes that affect drug pharmacokinetics (PK), raising concerns about pharmacotherapy. Despite growing clinical experience, evidence-based guidance for medication use following MBS remains limited. Should drug dosages be adjusted after MBS? Should clinicians and pharmacists consider alternative pharmacotherapy for these patients? Are PK changes time-dependent following MBS? This presentation will highlight insights into PK changes after MBS and discuss how these findings can be translated into practical recommendations for pharmacotherapy.
