Laura de Jong

Postdoctoral Researcher, LUMC

Laura de Jong obtained both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences from Leiden University, achieving the highest distinction (summa cum laude) for her Master's degree. She completed her PhD cum laude at the Leiden Academic Center for Drug Research under the supervision of Dr. Martijn Manson and Prof. Dr. Jesse Swen. Within the Division of Systems Pharmacology & Pharmacy, her research focused on understanding how non-genetic factors, such as inflammation and concomitant medication use, influence liver drug metabolism. This work aimed to improve the prediction of individual drug metabolism and contribute to the personalization of pharmacotherapy. The research was conducted in close collaboration with the hospital pharmacy of the Leiden University Medical Center, facilitating bidirectional translation between preclinical findings and clinical practice.Currently, she is a postdoctoral researcher at the Leiden University Medical Center within the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Her work focuses on liver cirrhosis, with a particular interest in how in vitro models can be leveraged to better understand disease progression and the associated alterations in hepatic function, ultimately aiming to improve translational insight and therapeutic strategies.

Presentation: The impact of non-genetic factors on drug metabolism: towards better phenotype predictions

Personalized medicine aims to move beyond the traditional “one-size-fits-all” approach by tailoring drug therapy to individual patients. While pharmacogenetics has improved our ability to predict drug response, genetic factors alone do not fully explain variability in drug metabolism. Non-genetic factors, such as concomitant medication and inflammation, can alter drug-metabolizing enzyme activity and lead to phenoconversion. This presentation highlights the impact of these factors on hepatic drug metabolism, combining preclinical and clinical studies to improve drug metabolizer phenotype predictions and support more personalized treatment strategies.
