MIMA - Radar Imaging Enhancing Breast Diagnostics
Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women, with rising incidence yearly - especially among younger women. Early diagnosis is key for survival, yet, 2D x-ray mammography, the standard screening method, underperforms in dense tissue, detecting no more than 60% of cancers. This impacts over half of active women and most of the younger ones, under 50 years old, who face disproportionally high mortality rate due to delayed diagnosis.MIMA develops an alternative method for radiation-free 3D imaging of the breast, at no compression, using electromagnetic waves of very low-power at microwave frequencies - similar to mobile phones. Early clinical tests showed promising sensitivity of the method in dense breast tissue, while it is radiation- and contrast agents-free, safe for frequent exams. In addition, the device integrates radar imaging technology, enabling automated reporting of suspicious Regions-Of-Interest in the volumetric breast image and computation of characteristics of those regions for malignancy scoring. This defines a unique competitive advantage even over the more advanced supplemental breast imaging methods -like DBT or ABUS- with potential to shorten, reading times and limit the dependence on subjective radiological diagnoses.MIMA addresses key gaps in accessibility and patient adherence, improved specificity, and workflow efficiency, positioning it as an attractive emerging modality in a growing and underserved breast imaging market.
