Another great TOPX Network Session took place 16th November at the BCF Career Event in Ghent. The keynote by Marieke Louwers (Director Strategic Alliances Argenx) on her career journey was followed by a panel discussion about “Aha-moments” with Liesbeth Ceelen (CEO at BioLizard), Ellen Lefever (General Counsel at AgomAb Therapeutics), Vanessa Parrein (Managing Partner Sillar Clinical) and Tine Carmeliet (Senior Associate at Allen & Overy). The session was moderated by Saar Vandekeere (founder of Science2Connect).

During the panel discussion it became clear that all these great ambitious women in life sciences had a very personal journey that they were happy to share. What these journeys had in common is that they showed that knowing your own strengths and having fun at work were the combination for success. Some practical tips were to talk to others (colleagues, mentor, coach etc.) to create opportunities, overcome your vulnerability by accepting it and to dare to make a career jump if you are ready.
The session ended with the quote: “I have not done it before, so I think I can do it.” – Pippi
Some questions form the audience showed that both introvert and extrovert persons have skills that make them successful! Just dare to get out of your comfort zone, since that is where the magic happens. The sessions truly inspired me and other young professionals by hearing all their passions, vulnerabilities and authentic values. The session ended with an overall positive and energizing feeling of “we can do it”!
Marieke Louwers shared her career journey where she start as a PhD researcher in molecular biology and moved to Director of Strategic Alliances. She candidly shared some important lessons:
- Being vulnerable and open is a very strong leadership approach
- Be yourself, so find a place where you feel at home
- It is about knowing where you want to go and making it happen. Be proactive and ask for it!
- Having it all does not exist, but set priorities, not limitations.
- Soft skills are hard skills!
- Network, network, network!
