Nothing has fascinated me more than the science underlying human biology. Therefore, I started to study Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven (Belgium) back in 2015. Already during my Bachelor’s, I aimed to extend my horizons: I attended a scientific summer school in Hangzhou (China) and joined the KU Leuven team of iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machine). During this (iGEM) competition, universities from all over the world united in Boston to join forces to improve human lives with the use of Synthetic Biology. To finish my Master degree, I joined the lab of Prof Karen Vousden at the Francis Crick Institute (London) for my thesis in cancer metabolism and was rewarded second Best Master thesis Award of Biomedical Sciences 2020.Nowadays, I am completing my PhD studies in the lab of Prof Sarah-Maria Fendt at KU Leuven-VIB in which I aim to identify metabolic vulnerabilities of breast cancer cells metastasizing in the liver. Doing this, we hope to open new therapeutic windows for metastatic cancer. Even though my scientific career has only started, it was immediately clear to me that teamwork and (international) collaboration are essential parts of science. Therefore, I am active as Chair of the PhD Association of my department at VIB to foster interaction and collaboration amongst young scientists. By doing this, I not only aim to support other students, but also hope to represent early-career female scientists and to encourage them to pursure their goals.
