Academia vs Industry

7 February 2024 - Online

This interesting discussion is for MSc and PhD students and postdocs who are on the fence. Do you want to continue your career in academic research, or should you try working in the industry? In this session our academic or industry experts will discuss the pros and cons of both paths. At the end of the session, the audience (you!) will get the opportunity to get involved.

Marijne Vandebergh | Postdoctoral researcher | VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology

Marijne Vandebergh graduated with a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the KU Leuven in 2017, after which she pursued a PhD degree at the Laboratory for Neuroimmunology, KU Leuven. In her doctoral studies, Marijne investigated the role of the environment and genetics on the susceptibility and clinical heterogeneity of the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis. In 2019, Marijne conducted a research stay at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Australia and completed her PhD at KU Leuven in 2022. Currently, she is a second-year postdoctoral researcher at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology in the Rademakers lab, focusing on genetic modifiers in the neurological disorder frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD).

Dave Speijer
Amsterdam UMC

Dave Speijer | Emeritus Assistant Professor | Amsterdam UMC

After studying Philosophy, Psychology and Biology/Biochemistry, I got my PhD working on RNA editing in mitochondria of Trypanosomes (in the group of Rob Benne). I specialized in proteomics and mass-spectrometric techniques, working on, amongst others, lysosomal storage disorders, HIV-1 and virulence of bacteria (Neisseria Meningitidis). A lot of effort also went into teaching about metabolism, biochemistry and science on many different levels. I am especially interested in (Molecular) Evolution (mostly regarding the evolution of the Eukaryotes and the role ROS and Mitochondria played). I also publish on "science and society". Some other interests: The origin of life, Parasite-Host Interactions, the Immune system and RNA viruses

About Amsterdam UMC
Amsterdam UMC is a leading medical center that combines complex high-quality patient care, innovative scientific research, and education of the next generation health care professionals. We believe that health care practice, research and education belong together, with each shaping and informing the other. Amsterdam UMC is home to eight research institutes: informal networks of research groups and departments working on various aspects of the same research theme. Several of the research institutes are joint institutes with other faculties of the University of Amsterdam and/or the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
