TOPX Summit 2025 Speaker

Arianne van Koppen | Scientist Health & Work, TNO

Arianne van Koppen holds a PhD and works as a senior scientist (comparable to university degree of associate professor) in the Healthy Living & Work unit within the Metabolic Health Research team at TNO since April 2017. Specializations include in vivo physiology related to cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome including metabolically associated steatohepatitis (MASH) diabetic and chronic kidney diseases (DKD and CKD), heart failure with preserved ejection fraction(HFpEF). Another specialization is focusing on the unexplored area of Women's health.

She completed her Bachelor studies at Rotterdam University (2001-2005) inBiology and Medical Laboratory Research with a specialization in Medical Biology, and her Masters Degreeat Leiden University (2005-2007) in Animal Biology with a specialization in Behavioural Biology, obtaining diplomas in both.

Her career includes PhD student and postdoctoral roles at UMC Utrecht (2007-2014),followed by a combined postdoc and scientist position at UMC Utrecht/TNO (2014-2017). Since April 2017,she fulfills a role as project leader and senior scientist/associate professor role at TNO.

During her PhD project Arianne studied the effects of stem-cell based therapy in chronic kidney disease where she developed multiple models of CKD, including mouse, rat and zebrafish models. After she obtained her PhD, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher on ciliary disfunctions in the kidney within the SysCilia consortium. She continued her career within TNO, where she worked on biomarker research for metabolically associated steatohepatitis which has resulted in many publications and 2 patented biomarker panels.Based on her background in renal disease obtained during her Phd traject, she also focussed on developing novel mouse models for diabetic and chronic kidney diseases exhibiting all the clinical relevant key factors including hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. This resulted in a new Cardiovascular-Kidney- Metabolic syndrome mouse model.Within TNO Arianne is the scientific lead of the Women’s health program which integrates biomedical, (psycho)social, and technological expertise to tackle women's health challenges. By merging fundamental research with practical solutions, TNO aim to ensure that future generations of women can achieve their full potential without health-related barriers. However, this goal cannot be reached in isolation. TNO collaborates with women themselves, healthcare professionals, employers, interest groups, researchers, policymakers, and organizations, including those in the food, pharmaceutical and technology sectors.

About TNO

The Dutch health care sector is facing major challenges which partly can be addressed by technological innovations that relieve work pressure to HCP’s. TNO is working on a number of such innovations together with stakeholders in the health care ecosystem. The unique presence of a broad range of technological and scientific disciplines and applications domains within TNO represents a wealth of possibilities to our customers and partners. Moreover, TNO is a qualified orchestrator of innovation-driven consortia that helps individual companies bringing their solutions to the market. In the years to come, TNO will further strengthen its focus and dedication to the health care sector with the ambition to improve public health, reduce labour pressure and costs, thereby safeguarding its accessibility.
