The Promise of Nuclear Medicine as a Diagnostic as a Therapy and to Support Drug Development

17 October 2024 | 14:00 - 15:15

The Netherlands is a global leader in the field of nuclear medicine and this field of nuclear medicine is rapidly expanding. Major growth is expected in the use of medical isotopes for the diagnosis of many diseases, the treatment of oncological diseases and as enabling technology in drug development. A wide range of tracers is in development for use in a wide variety of diseases and many clinical trials are underway to confirm their efficacy. These innovations are often developed in the academia and further developed by larger (foreign) companies for application in daily practice: e.g. The Swiss Novartis has launched the Lutetium-177 dotatate developed in Rotterdam, the Japanese Terumo the Holmium-166 microspheres developed in UMC Utrecht.

In this session, it will be explained, and illustrated by cases, how nuclear medicine is used in drug development, as diagnostic and treatment and what is needed to implement a tracer in the clinical practice.
