Lipids represent a structurally and functionally diverse class of biomolecules that play central roles in cellular organization, signaling, and systemic metabolism. Dysregulation of lipid handling — including absorption, transport, and metabolic conversion — has been implicated in a wide range of diseases, most notably (cardio)metabolic disorders and cancer. Accordingly, plasma lipid profiling has become an important strategy for biomarker discovery and mechanistic insight. Beyond their value as disease indicators, individual lipid species and their derivatives are explored as therapeutic targets. Lipoproteins, the endogenous carriers that enable the systemic transport of hydrophobic molecules such as sterols and fat soluble vitamins, further illustrate the translational relevance of lipid biology. Inspired by these natural delivery systems, lipid based nanoparticles are now widely employed to improve drug targeting and efficacy. This session will contain presentations of (upcoming) experts in the lipid field that showcase diverse roles of these biomolecules in drug discovery, development, and clinical application.
