Radboudumc

Fleur is a hospital pharmacist, clinical pharmacologist and PhD candidate at Radboudumc in Nijmegen. Prior to joining Radboudumc, she worked as a hospital pharmacist at Amsterdam UMC. Her PhD research focuses on optimizing antibiotic treatment for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, with a particular interest in antibiotic safety and pharmacokinetics. She is involved in the international Staphylococcus aureus Network Adaptive Platform (SNAP) trial and coordinates two substudies within SNAP, investigating how antibiotic exposure relates to efficacy and toxicity, as well as the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Her work aims to bridge clinical practice and pharmacological research to address unanswered questions in the treatment of S. aureus bacteremia.

Presentation: Rethinking 60 years of S. aureus therapy: from effective to optimal treatment

For more than half a century, anti-staphylococcal β-lactams have been the cornerstone of treatment for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. But is effective treatment necessarily optimal treatment? Emerging evidence is challenging long-standing treatment practices, highlighting the importance of not only efficacy, but also drug safety and antibiotic exposure. This presentation explores how recent clinical evidence and ongoing pharmacokinetic research are reshaping the treatment of S. aureus bacteremia. From choosing the right antibiotic to understanding drug exposure in individual patients, can we move beyond effective therapy towards safer, smarter treatment?
