Team Coordinator – Policies for Research and Availability of Medicines
Department of Pharmaceutical Affairs and Medical Technology at the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports

Jasper Claessen (PhD) is coordinating policy advisor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Affairs and Medical Technology at the Dutch Ministry of Health. He works on policies regarding the development of innovative medicines, with a special focus on the synergy between public and private interests in medicine development. As a team coordinator he covers policy work on the pharmaceutical legislation and market authorizations, as well as wider availability of medicines, and policies on supply chain vulnerabilities and production. Jasper takes a special interest in policies aimed to stimulate R&D into novel antimicrobials, and represents the Dutch Ministry of Health in several national and international organizations that aim to tackle the AMR crisis. He coordinates a series of comprehensive studies into the financial ecosystem surrounding novel medicine development, and government incentives to steer R&D. During the COVID pandemic, he coordinated the Dutch crisis response team aimed at making new COVID-19 medication accessible. Prior to joining the ministry, he worked for several years as an innovation consultant building public/private R&D partnerships, and attracting funding for drug development programs and other health innovation initiatives. Trained as a molecular biologist, Jasper Claessen spent many years as an academic researcher at MIT and Cambridge University.
