Mariëtte Boon

Assistant Professor, Obesity Center CGG, Erasmus MC

Mariëtte Boon is obesity physician and assistant professor at the Obesity Center CGG in the Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, and the LUMC, Leiden. She is an international expert on brown adipose tissue and lipid metabolism in relation to obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Her current research focuses on the role of glucocorticoid receptor sensitivity in development of cardiometabolic diseases and ethnic aspects herein. She received (inter)national prizes and grants for her research, amongst which the prestigious NWO-Veni grant, and the KNAW Young Scientists Award. Together with colleague prof Liesbeth van Rossum she wrote the international bestseller ‘FAT: the secret organ’. 

During her lecture, she will elaborate on the complexity of obesity, and novel insights on potential underlying causes of obesity. Furthermore, she will go into existing and new pharmacotherapy as a treatment for obesity.
