Dr. Mihály Balogh is an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen, specializing in pharmacology and neuroscience. He earned his Pharm.D. and Ph.D. from Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary, focusing his doctoral research on novel (peripheral) opioid analgesics for inflammatory and neuropathic pain. His postdoctoral position at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, further deepened his expertise in cancer-related pain and neuroimmune interactions. Currently, he is mainly interested in the now quickly developing new field, cancer neuroscience. In his current role, Dr. Balogh integrates his research insights into education, coordinating and developing various pharmacology courses of the Pharmacy BSc. and MSc. Programs at the University of Groningen.
Presentation: Colon tumor initiated systemic neuronal damage in mice
Chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CIPN) remains one of the most debilitating side effects of cancer treatment, yet its mechanisms are poorly understood. Using a novel orthotopic colon cancer model, we discovered that tumors alone can trigger “subclinical” neuronal damage - characterized by intraepidermal nerve fiber loss, mitochondrial dysfunction, and altered calcium homeostasis - without overt pain symptoms. These paraneoplastic changes may sensitize the nervous system and dramatically worsen CIPN once chemotherapy begins. The observed robust inflammatory changes might also affect the central nervous system. Our findings highlight a previously unrecognized tumor-nerve interaction that could explain why some patients develop severe, therapy-resistant CIPN, and open new avenues for future research and personalized prevention strategies.
